“It gives us great pleasure to launch a Belgian craft brew with a rich history dating back to 1074. Affligem is alive with heritage, purity and craftsmanship”, explained Hans Essaadi, Managing Director of GAB. “This being the first super-premium brand in our portfolio, Affligem appeals to sophisticated drinkers who appreciate fine, quality and intimate occasions.”

The beer was first brewed in Belgium by six knights who, in 1074, gave up the pursuit of war and committed themselves to purity, to the art of brewing beer. They were rewarded with a precious discovery; a taste so pure, unique and full character that they dedicated the rest of their lives to it.

The original recipe for Affligem, has been passed down through generations since 1074, unchanged, and an unwavering commitment to excellence continues throughout the brewery’s day-to-day execution. This includes the process of “Double Fermentation” – adding a special yeast to the freshly-brewed bottles, giving Affligem its distinctive, mature and complex taste.

Over the years, Affligem has won gold at a series of industry awards, including the prestigious ‘European Beer Star Awards’, where some of the most renowned and beer-savvy experts congregate to judge authentic specialty beers. Further accolades were also achieved at the ‘World Beer Cup’, celebrating the superior taste and quality of Affligem.

Affligem is made for private, cosy and relaxed occasions, ranging from one-on-one fine dining to a small gathering of good friends. Affligem is available in premium dining establishments, intimate bars, premium grocers and convenience stores nationwide from October 2014.

The formal affair introduced the Affligem Masters, who demonstrated various methods of enjoying the Affligem experience through the signature pouring rituals. The Experience Pour is the complete pouring ritual, with a set of unique equipment that allows drinkers to savour the intense fruit, citrus and spice flavours. The Classic Pour is a simplified ritual that allows drinkers to enjoy the fruity hoppiness of Affligem.

With the addition of Affligem, GAB plans to appeal to the super-premium beer segment in Malaysia by presenting a quality Belgian craft brew, every bottle double fermented, with a recipe still pertinent to today’s tastes and lifestyle, since 1074.

Hints that something big awaits the public were dropped weeks before the launch of Guinness Anchor Berhad’s Oktoberfest celebrations. Does size really matter? Is big better? The curiosity of many was laid to rest when the country’s leading brewery unveiled Malaysia’s Biggest Mug at their launch of the annual beer festival. Standing at 2.6m high and 1.72m wide, the giant replica of the company’s renowned Oktoberfest 2014 promotional mug, created a new record that was endorsed by The Malaysia Book of Records at the event.

Hans Essaadi, managing director of GAB said: “Oktoberfest is a popular festival that many look forward to annually. And so this year, we decided we are going to commemorate it in a big, extraordinary way; hence the grandeur you see before you. This feat definitely has been a rewarding challenge especially now that we’ve set a new record in The Malaysia Book of Records.

The Biggest Mug which took about a month to complete, is made out of fibre glass. The giant vessel, which can actually hold liquid, will be travelling the peninsular so consumers can have a closer look and partake in Malaysia’s Biggest Mug “Guess the Litre” challenge. More than 400 guests witnessed the rise of Kirin Ichiban at a Japanese-themed cultural festival at Zebra Square Kuala Lumpur on 9th April 2014.

Kirin Ichiban, a super-premium beer developed by Kirin Brewery, uses 100% Malt and an innovative “First Press” brewing method to achieve its unique taste profile. The First Press method means only the finest ingredients – including the purest malt, and extracts from the first strain only are used in the brewing process. What results is a premium beer that is crisp, rich in flavour yet leaves little after taste due to its purity.

At the launch guests, including guest of honour His Excellency Makio Miyagawa, Japan’s Ambassador to Malaysia, were treated to the Kirin Ichiban Experience. The guests were ushered through various experiential points for a taste of Kirin Ichiban’s unique values. They were transported to Kirin Ichiban’s universe by way of Japanese culture, food and hospitality.

During the celebration, Bruce Dallas, GAB’s Marketing Director, shared that the company is pleased to be able to add Kirin Ichiban into the brewer’s portfolio as it further enhances the company’s offering to Malaysian consumers. He pointed out that Kirin Ichiban has great potential in this market because consumers here are becoming increasingly discerning.

“After extensive market research, we found that there is much potential for growth in the super-premium beer category. We believe Kirin Ichiban with its unique flavour has the potential to fill that gap,” said Bruce.

Kirin Ichiban is already available in more than 40 countries and the brand has enjoyed healthy growth in those markets.

Bruce adds, “Kirin Ichiban is an excellent companion for any type of cuisine, even the most delicate of flavours and that is because the beer whilst being crisp and full flavoured, leaves very little aftertaste due to the beer’s purity.”

Apart from Bruce, His Excellency, Makio Miyagawa, Japan’s Ambassador to Malaysia, also said a few words on the super-premium beer at the event: “”Kirin Ichiban is the No. 1 100% malt beer in Japan, and Kirin Brewery, with over 100 years of history, has always been doing well in Japan. I am delighted that a great product like Kirin Ichiban has been added to the portfolio of GAB, the leading brewer in Malaysia. This will provide further opportunity for Japanese culture to be showcased in Malaysia, particularly by generating further appreciation for Japanese food and drinks amongst Malaysians.”

Kirin Ichiban is GAB’s first Japanese product in its portfolio and it is the company’s first new brand in five years. With its addition, GAB plans to increase the distribution network of the 100% Malt, First Press beer giving greater accessibility to the product. The company will also be bringing world class innovative engagements for consumers to experience and enjoy Kirin Ichiban.
