This was one of the early place that developed my interest in craft beer about 2 years ago when it was still named Heart of House. The partnership of this gastropub has split and one of the owner has branch out and set up his own place.

If IPA, Saison, Porter, Cider and Weissbier are something that hit hard on your thirst, then Potbellies is the place for you. According to Derek (the owner), they have struck an exclusive deal with Singapore’s American Craft Beer Club. They will provide some very attractive price to their offerings of American craftbeer to add on top of the delicious food like Otah-otah pizza and fried chicken wings that is to be offered. More beer varieties will be offered on tap and also some limited edition American craftbeer.

So, if you happen be around Tiong Bahru area in Singapore, make sure you pay a visit to Potbellies. It is situated right beside NTUC along Kim Tian Road, you will not missed the outdoor table and flooring tiled with craftbeer bottle caps that beautifully decorate the place. However be informed though, that Potbellies will be rename to Lee Tai Fu soon, due to unintentional infringement of the same name of an establishment in the USA. Address can be found as follow.

Same Beer Different Yeast

I always know that different yeast will give the beer different taste and character. I’m glad that Brewdog did the Unleash The Yeast Series for people like me that lazy to brew to understand the yeast character a bit more.

So what Brewdog did was using the same mash but different yeast to produce the beer. The end result was quite amazing for me.

First stop is the pilsner, I was expecting it to be crispy and refreshing but it turn out quite pale and kinda look like an ale then a pilsner. Maybe the mash are not that suitable for the Pilsen yeast.

We try the American ale yeast next, does give a better character to the beer. More malty in taste and heavier in body. But may not able to tell much different from the Pilsen yeast.

Next I did the Belgian Trappist, which surprising very close to some of the saison character. The beer have that yeastie, light spice/herb character. It work quite well with the beer.

Then came the last one which is the Bavarian Weizen. It does give out a hint of the banana skin kind of oxidise character, remind me of wheat beer.

I have to say, same beer different yeast does tell a lot of story of the origin of the beer. That’s why most same category beers from different brewery may taste different. Not only from different ingredient. The brewers secret yeast formula will also bring forth a different depth to the beer.

Is very refreshing to able to try it out. Something I can learn a lot from. Cheers!

Nose
Have a malty aroma. Not pungent but have this light sweet fume.

Taste
Entry have bitter roasted with roasted sour. Quite carbonated for 9.5% ABV beer. Can feel the alcohol warm at the end. Linger a light roasted aroma. A small hint chocolate. Got a light feel of whisky barrel style beer as well. As it turn warm can taste the malt taste on subtle end.

Nose
Have a nice pleasant of malt with faint rice aroma and hint of like chocolate.

Taste
The body is quite soft and light flavour of roasted malt and faint taste of rice. A bit of chocolate hint and some light flavour of roasted sour like you get from the coffee. The beer is 5% ABV. Not much carbonation.

Personal Opinion
A nice an easy food pairing beer as the flavour is not strong. Wish it have a heavier body to suit the dark beer character. Suitable to pair with BBQ, light spicy food,
