Meet With Mikkeller Brewmaster

October 21, 2020 – 3:35 pm Comments Off

Last Thursday, Taps Beer Bar host an event called “Meet the Brewer: Mikkel from Mikkeller!”. The brewmaster of Mikkeller – Mikkel Borg Bjergsø present at the event. No speech nothing, just most of the beer fan boy meeting him in person. I was suppose to have an interview with him before the event start, due to some bad planning I wasn’t able to make it in time.

Is nice to able to meet up the man behind the brand that I respect a lot. As I like a lot of their beer. From the casual chat, I learned that he is opening a Mikkeller bar in Thailand, opening sometime in December. Which I can’t wait to go there, as they will have around 30 taps to play with.

After some light conversation, decided to bring him nearby Taps beer bar to explore some street food. I brought him over to the secret Kuey Teow Soup place for him to try some comfort food after some drinks. Rather then just chat about beer, the conversation is more on the relationship between each brewmaster. I bet people asked him all the time about his beer, what is his inspiration and where he got his inspiration. So I decided to ask a bit unconventional question to make him don’t feel that bored.

He did said about brewing Riesling wine in Germany now. As wine is one of his favourite drink too. Can’t wait to try it out and see how the result goes. One of his craziest ingredient is Black Truffle which he spent USD8k just for that brew which end up with not much Truffle character in there. Craft beer scene is not big Malaysia, yet was happy to see so many people turn up to meet Mikkel in person and snap picture with. I bet he feel like a rockstar for a while.

There is saying, never trust a skinny brewmaster but honestly if someone can brew beer that good, who care if he is skinny or fat. Mikkel for sure earn my respect. He for sure one of the top brewer out there for daring to used or try different ingredient to create some of the most awesome beer out there. We will meet again soon in Thailand. Cheers!

Fail: Drink & Don’t Drive

October 15, 2020 – 10:02 am Comments Off

Drink and drive is always an issue in Malaysia. I have too many friends that I know off met an accident after drink. In that instance non of them got hurt badly and neither is their victim. Regardless how minor or major the accident, drink & drive is an offence that we must avoid.

I myself is guilty of this. Many of us have survive many time to tell the story but accident can happen anytime, but drunk driving will make the possibility higher. Which is not something that we should do or practise.

In oversea, the practise of drink & don’t drive is something really good. We should all learn from it. I myself should start doing that. I shall not say more, just have to slowly get used to it. Cheers and be save on the road.

Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB), the leading beer and stout brewer in Malaysia kicked off its month-long Oktoberfest celebration today at Tujo Bar-serrie at Ascott in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. GAB’s Oktoberfest campaign was officially launched after a reenactment of the royal wedding between Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese that was held in Munich in 1810, which gave birth to the Oktoberfest celebrations held worldwide today.

At the launch event, Hans Essaadi, Managing Director of GAB shared, “Oktoberfest has historically been a time of celebration and merriment amongst family and friends, featuring good food, great beers and an all-round unforgettable time. This year, GAB has planned even more exciting and engaging activities and I am confident that with our award-winning portfolio of beers, we will once again set the standard among our loyal consumers for providing drinking experiences that are both fresh and engaging.”

As the fifth year running that GAB is organising this globally-renowned celebration in a big way right here in Malaysia, this year’s Oktoberfest celebrations will include a series of 14 historically themed parties nationwide, special promotions featuring a special edition 1 litre Ceramic Oktoberfest Mug and GAB’s entire portfolio of award-winning beers, including the original Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier.

“We at GAB are especially proud to continue making the Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier available for our consumers, which is one of only six beers allowed to be called an official Oktoberfest Bier and served on Oktoberfest. Be sure to try out this distinctive, limited edition lager at the selected outlets offering it during our Oktoberfest celebrations,” said Essaadi.

During the launch event, guests were able to sample authentic German Oktoberfest cuisine, as well as traditional Oktoberfest activities including traditional German folk dances, beer mug holding competitions and ‘Nail the Wood’, a traditional German game which requires participants to have both power and accuracy. Adding to the celebratory air was the presence of Crown Prince Ludwig, Princess Therese and their royal procession who brought a historical touch to the event. The royal entourage regaled participants with interesting tales from times long past.

A Resounding Start to Carlsberg Malaysia Oktoberfest

October 3, 2020 – 10:27 am Comments Off

Don your lederhosen or your dirndl as Carlsberg Malaysia has brought Oktoberfest, the world renowned annual Bavarian festival, all the way from Germany to our neighbourhood bars throughout the big cities and small towns in Malaysia, with an endless flow of beer and fun.

Known as the country’s most authentic Oktoberfest celebration, Carlsberg Malaysia Oktoberfest 2013 is a beer extravaganza that offers the most loved beer brand, Carlsberg, as well as three imported Bavarian beer brands, Erdinger, Franziskaner and Lowenbrau, served in a collectible rugged-style stein that customers can take home and add to their collection of the past two years of Carlsberg Malaysia’s Oktoberfest mugs.

Flown in from Germany, a six person Oktoberfest Oom-Pa-Pah band will be belting out traditional Oktoberfest jingles and sounding a 12-foot long alpine horn from Germany to delight the crowd celebrating the merriness of beer festival.

Acclaimed as the first-of-its kind in Malaysia, the long horn has successfully made it into the Malaysian Book of Records as the ‘Longest Carlsberg Malaysia Oktoberfest Longhorn’. Topping the festival off are of course the lovely Carlsberg Dirndl girls, all beautifully decked in traditional Bavarian outfits to perform the witty “chicken dance” along with Oktoberfest revellers.

True to Bavarian tradition, Carlsberg Malaysia Oktoberfest campaign was officiated with the tapping of the ceremonial keg by Managing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia Henrik Juel Andersen, together with the brewer’s subsidiary Luen Heng F&B Sdn Bhd General Manager Kenneth Soh, Vice President, Passenger Cars, Mercedes Benz Malaysia Mr. Kai Schlickum and Ms Joyce Yap, CEO, Retail of Pavilion KL.

After the first keg was tapped, a resounding toot of the 12-foot long horn reverberated across the entire corridor of Pavillion, KL signalling the lovely Dirndl girls to invite beer lovers to show off their moves by performing ‘chicken dance’ and taking part in a range of fun-filled games including hat switching and arm wrestling which are all traditional mainstays of Oktoberfest events.

Andersen said, “Oktoberfest is about bringing people together in the spirit of good cheer and camaraderie while in the midst of enjoying food, music and beer in a responsible manner.”

“Throughout the month-long festival, beer lovers can enjoy the authentic yet uniquely Carlsberg Malaysia experience at selected eight venues nationwide, leading to a massive three-day Grand Finale party galore that will take place exclusively at Old Wing outdoor car park of our Oktoberfest Venue Partner 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya on October 11th to 13th. These parties come complete with the collectible beer stein, authentic Oktoberfest Oom Pa Pah band, the record breaking 12-foot long horn, Carlsberg Dirndl girls as well as plenty of games and online contests where beer lovers stand a chance to take home more collectible premiums.”

“In addition, we partnered with our customers to co-host smaller parties at 38 western-concept bars and pubs and will be running the Oktoberfest promotion at over 300 outlets nationwide,” he concluded.

Adding to the spirit of Oktoberfest, Carlsberg Malaysia Oktoberfest calls upon beer lovers to take part in Facebook activities, including Snap & Prost!, Shout Out Loud and Dirndl Girl Search to win free rounds of Carlsberg beer and attractive giveaways.
