Smokers have lower IQ

February 27, 2021 – 10:36 am 1 Comment

(Strait Times Online) NEW YORK – CIGARETTE smokers have lower IQs than non-smokers, and the more a person smokes, the lower their IQ, according to a study of over 20,000 Israeli military recruits.

Dr Mark Weiser and colleagues from Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer found that young men who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day or more had IQ scores 7.5 points lower than non-smokers. ‘Adolescents with poorer IQ scores might be targeted for programmes designed to prevent smoking,’ they conclude in the journal Addiction.

While there is evidence for a link between smoking and lower IQ, many studies have relied on intelligence tests given in childhood, and have also included people with mental and behavioral problems, who are both more likely to smoke and more likely to have low IQs, Dr Weiser and his team noted.

To better understand the smoking-IQ relationship, the researchers looked at 20,211 18-year-old men recruited into the Israeli military. The group did not include anyone with major mental health problems, because these individuals are disqualified from military service.

According to the researchers, 28 percent of the study participants smoked at least one cigarette a day, around 3 per cent said they were ex-smokers, and 68 percent had never smoked. The smokers had significantly lower intelligence test scores than non-smokers, and this remained true even after the researchers accounted for socioeconomic status measured by how many years of formal education a recruit’s father had completed.

The average IQ for non-smokers was about 101, while it was 94 for men who had started smoking before entering the military. IQ steadily dropped as the number of cigarettes smoked increased, from 98 for people who smoked one to five cigarettes daily to 90 for those who smoked more than a pack a day. (Beerbeer) This is not a good sign, as many knows that alcohol do kill some brains cell. If smoking lowered IQ, Beer and Cigarette sure are the best buddy to make us less smart… that’s not good. Don’t forget about our health too, that explain why we keep drinking and smoking as we are getting less smart to accept the fact…. can it be true?

Ocha or Beer?

February 24, 2021 – 10:25 am 4 Comments

I was invited by Larry the owner of Ocha to come over. But when he tell me about cheras, I was quite skeptical. Ocha opened end of last year, which is slightly around 2 months. Still a very new place.

From the outside of Menara PGRM you can easily spot this place. I like the clean look of it, warm lighting is always my favourite. It make the place cosy and nice to be in. By the way Ocha means Green Tea for those who don’t know… haha

Because we were there early, the place is still empty. I like the ambient of the place, very cosy and nice. Is simple yet very nicely done. I don’t mind coming to this place to do my work during afternoon as the place is quiet and got wifi for me to go online.

Or if you like to have some air and little breeze, you can always sit on the wide corridor. The corridor area feel nice to have beer.

My favourite area in Ocha is here. I like the dark brown deco here, which feel even nicer to have my beer and chat with my friends. Maybe it look more like a VIP place.

By now you should have guess that this place is selling Paulaner beer. As this will be another exclusive Paulaner joint. With Paualner logo hanging at almost every corner at the Restaurant, who can actually miss what beer they are selling… haha

As many of Beerbeer reader knows that I’m a big fan of Beer and Food pairing. I love to eat and drink at the same time. With a wide variety of finger food, this is for sure one of the best pairing. Fried calamari or fried shrimp, goes perfectly with the chill beer that enhance the aroma of the food. The more you drink the more you want to eat or vice versa.

The tempura prawn mix with the sauce with a gulp of beer, sure an indulgence of perfect harmony. Ocha will have free flow of Paulaner beer during their buffet section with some additional cost, which will be a big hit to food and  beer lover. So Cheras people, now you don’t need to drive all the way down to other place, you can just drop by your neighbourhood and enjoy Paulaner beer.

This place will constantly update their promotion, I will keep my eyes on Ocha to see what is their next promotion that will crave my appetite. This place is not bad after all, how wrong was I about Cheras. Is time for me to take back my word. Cheers!

Beer Good For Your Bones

February 23, 2021 – 2:46 pm Comments Off

(The Malaysian Insider) Beer drinkers now have a good excuse to order another round – the brew may help keep bones strong, a study has found.

Researchers from the Department of Food Science & Technology at the University of California, have found beer is a rich source of silicon and may help prevent osteoporosis, as dietary silicon is a key ingredient for increasing bone mineral density.

These were the findings after researchers tested 100 commercial beers for silicon content and categorized the data according to beer style and source.

Previous research has suggested beer contained silicon but little was known about how silicon levels varied with the different types of beer and malting processes.

“We have examined a wide range of beer styles for their silicon content and have also studied the impact of raw materials and the brewing process on the quantities of silicon that enter wort and beer,” researcher Charles Bamforth said in a statement.

The study, published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, found the beers’ silicon content ranged from 6.4 milligrams per liter to 56.5mg per liter. The average person’s silicon intake each day is between 20mg and 50mg.

The researchers found there was little change in the silicon content of barley during the malting process as most of the silicon in barley is in the husk, which is not affected greatly during malting.

They found pale ales showed the highest silicon content while non-alcoholic beers, light lagers and wheat beers had the least silicon.

“Beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon,” said Bamforth.

“Wheat contains less silicon than barley because it is the husk of the barley that is rich in this element.”

But Bamforth told reporters that the results shouldn’t be taken too serious. The study examined the beers but it did not look at bone mineral density or analyse patients’ data.

“I would first consider flavour and whether you like it or not,” he told science and technology magazine Discover.

“Choose the beer you enjoy, for goodness sake.”

(Beerbeer) I do hope it will strengthen bones as this will really help me, but how about my liver?
