Winning the calorie conscious beer drinkers

(The StarOnline) MILWAUKEE: How low can beer makers go? Having conquered the beer-belly set, some of the biggest U.S. brewers are trying to win over the six-pack-ab crowd with ultra-low-calorie suds. The question is: Are drinkers willing to sacrifice flavor and a bit of the buzz? And: How long before beer gets turned back into water?

Most regular American beers, such as Budweiser, have about 150 calories and 5 percent alcohol, while most light beers contain around 100 calories and 4 percent alcohol. The new brews, MillerCoors’ Miller Genuine Draft 64 and Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Select 55, are well below that.

Their calorie counts are in their names, and they both contain less than 3 percent alcohol. Guzzling a whole MGD 64 or Select 55 is like taking a few swigs of a Bud. Mindy Rotellini, a 25-year-old graphic designer from St. Louis who watches her calories, reaches for MGD 64 from time to time, even though the brew is “kind of watery” and it’s tough to feel the alcohol.

“I just have to drink more, and then it’s going to equal the amount of calories in a regular beer, so why not just drink a regular beer?” she says.

Chris Bethel switched to Select 55 because it is low-cal. He says he likes the light taste and doesn’t mind the reduced alcohol. “I’m not a college kid trying to get wasted,” says the 36-year-old network engineer in the Columbus, Ohio, area.

Both drinkers speak to an unavoidable tradeoff: To cut calories, beer companies reduce the amount of malted barley and other grains that are fermented during the brewing process. That, in turn, reduces the amount of alcohol in the brew. The result is a beer more like its main ingredient, water.

“You start producing something that could taste very, very thin,” says Thomas Shellhammer, professor of fermentation science at Oregon State University. “That would be the challenge for the brewer, to produce something that still tastes like beer.”

(As for nonalcoholic beers, some have more flavor than others, but overall they tend to have more calories than the super-low-cal brews. The top-selling brand, O’Doul’s, made by Anheuser-Busch, has about 70 calories and is thin-tasting.)

Light beers account for about half of the US$99 billion-a-year beer market in the U.S., according to the Beverage Information Group, a market research firm. But the market for super-low-calorie is probably small, says Eric Schmidt, manager of information services.

MillerCoors says MGD 64 (slogan: “As light as it gets”) has sold twice as much in its first year as Miller Genuine Draft Light, which it replaced a year ago. It would not release specific figures.

After a few weeks of testing Select 55 in 15 markets, Anheuser-Busch decided to expand into a dozen more starting this month. The company isn’t sure yet whether demand for the beer is big enough for it to go national. MGD 64 is 2.8 percent alcohol. Select 55 is 2.4 percent.

David Mitchell has been drinking MGD 64 since its release and says he prefers its taste to that of Coors Light, his previous beer of choice. “It’s almost like drinking a glass of water, but it has the beer taste,” says the 41-year-old from Gilbert, Arizona.

But some hardcore dieters aren’t interested. Beer connoisseur John LeMasney used to review craft beers on his site Beercritic.wordpress.com but gave that up after gaining 50 pounds (22 kilograms) in a year.

He has cut back on his drinking to lose weight. But he refuses to try the new low-cal beers.”I’d rather spend 200 calories and get something I really enjoy,” he says.

Great Night At One Utama Oktoberfest 2009!

October 30, 2020 – 10:19 am Comments Off

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

One Utama Oktoberfest is back. This is the one event that many people look forward to, the RM1 beer, the beer choices, the crowd, the cheering and of course the fun.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

I was there around 5:30pm and to my surprise for a thursday, I would said the crowd is good. Many people are getting their OncCard as you need the card to get the RM1 beer and some of the merchandise. So coming early to get the card and line up for the beer will be a good thing.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

Almost all beer brand is there. While I was there, they are still setting up and arranging. Coming here for me is like a gathering, seeing all the familiar faces hanging around the tent area selling their beer and food.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

Is really nice to chat with them and to see their preparation. For me all of them are friends, for them everyone are competitors. But about 5:45pm a slight drizzling drool down from the sky. Everyone is keeping their finger cross.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

The poor roast pig, I will have a taste of you later. Dave’s will always prepare a good food for this event. From far I know they have been with this event since it started few years back and every year they will come up with better menu to cater with the beer.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

All the stuff getting ready for the beer, as it’s still drizzling outside everyone try to walk as fast as possible to enter a shaded area.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

By the time is 6pm, the counter open and happy faces all around ready to get their RM1 beer. The guy on the picture is the first for this year event. He must have waited since last year. There is some bad news and some good news. The bad news is each OneCard are allow to only get 1 bottle of the RM1 beer, the good news is even you come around 7pm you still be able to get the beer. I guess every have  fair share for the beer.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

Around 6:20pm the rain get heavier, the working crew have to move some of the table and chair inside. I like the arrangement of the tables and chair for this year event, is a well done for me. I guess their weather control doesn’t work, but the good thing is people still pouring in to get the RM1 beer.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

As the rain still drooling, inside become quite stuffy because everyone want the rain to stop. With a beer in hand they must be praying very hard for the rain to stop. Because of the rain I also have to keep my DSLR and use my old faithful Canon Ixus.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

The crowd do prey hard, very hard to be exact. The rain actually stop and the place now is cooling. It’s the perfect place to hang with food and chill with beers.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

Even the dancer start dancing and performing in front to get the crowd going as the crowd grows.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

At last after waiting to settle down, my appetite also grow. Remember the pig in the picture up there, now become my serving of appetite. What better to go with beer then Siew Yok. It’s a perfect combination.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

Just around 8pm plus the place is pack, the shower of rain really make this place a perfect spot. God really have mercy on beer drinker… haha

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

This guys won the beer guessing contest, he actually walk away with a Sony Ericsson mobile phone, you lucky fellow. But he did give me 2 bottles of beer for taking his picture, maybe this is my way of getting free beer. You can try you luck Friday night and Saturday night.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

Beside dancer performing, Beer guessing game, they also have live band performing. Some pop and some rock + some head banging to entertain the crowd from young to old.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

The multitude of crowd make this event special. The gathering of friends, meeting new friends, drinking beer, drinking new type of beer, all this little small details make One Utama Oktoberfest one of the most anticipated event on my list.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

You can event snap pictures with the German costume crew. I have to say well done, I was not even with my usual geng. Just chill up with some people I met at Athur’s Day Eve at Sid’s Pub. I really enjoy my self. Those who been to this event know that this is a must come every year, and this year the things are more organise then last year.

One Utama Oktoberfest 2009

The night is grand but this is not good bye yet, because I’ll be here again on Saturday. Hope to see you all there. Cheers and happy drinking in this event!

A Life Less Ordinary #1

October 29, 2020 – 11:40 am Comments Off

Generally, I speak to a lot of people. Gay people, lesbian people, photo people, banker people, lawyer people, religious people, doctor people you get the idea. Last week I heard someone said something I can’t shake off my head, ‘It’s so sad that some people can’t find a way to release themselves’

ipod-dead-01

On Monday, I sent in my running mate, an iPod shuffle into warranty again (second time in 2 months) because it died. Running is important to me because it helps me relax and when I want to relax things don’t go as planned, of course in some strange ways I get very upset, and the problem could be easily solved by buying another iPod shuffle, one for backup in case the other die. Fail safe plan.

BUT it died after my second run of the day in the evening. I was so bloody pissed, I wanted to buy kerosene and burn down the damn store, I want to slap the sales person repeatedly until he is really sorry and I want to do nasty painful unerotic-for-God’s-sake things to Steve Jobs that Bill Gates would love to see. At the store’s point of view if you have a CCTV on the top, you could see a small Chinese boy charging into the store with his fist clenched and his expression blur as hell cause CCTV resolution is, well, useless. They gave me a replacement, and I was still upset because of all the trouble they caused. That’s when you call a friend who’s got a name like Vodka, nonchalant no nonsense drinker.

good-crowd-01

Immediately all my troubles were flushed away when I arrive at location and saw the Vodka, Michael and Kelvin, the so-called ‘Heavy Weights’ and this other dude stupid enough to come out with idea that we concentrate drink quantity not quality. So we finished all our Hoegaarden and started with generic tap beer. To cut a long story short, I couldn’t care less about my baneful Apple experience anymore and the dude with the big mouth was passed on the table before we left.

pool bar & Grill @ one world

That’s what we do, we drink to escape, we drink to release ourselves from all the troubles in our head and we drink to forget. My good friend Denise tripped and fell down a flight of stairs. The next day, we went for satay, she limping crutches, in great pain. So she ordered some beer with and the next thing I saw, she had the crutches on her shoulder, whistling away while walking back to my car and my jaw was on the floor.

angel-beer-01

Without the beer, I’d probably harass the Apple people more, Denise would have had to endure a little more pain, and the dude would not know how it felt like to sleep in pub. Maybe it’s our channel to release ourselves, maybe it’s like how a friend say – ‘Learning how to get serenity and calmness by drinking ales and bitter’. For me, it was just what we need, sometimes.
