Malaysia craft beer scene maybe small. Mostly focus in KL, but the selection are growing each day. More then 1000, different type of beers have been brought in to KL. The best has yet to come.
Interestingly imported microbreweries or single owned brand are not very popular. Most people are still stick with commercial brands from local or oversea. Firstly is because of the price.
What’s fun about craft beers is the varieties! For instant, Pale Ale have a good variants of India Pale Ale (IPA), Double IPA, Imperial IPA, Triple IPA, Session IPA, Black IPA, White IPA, Wheat IPA, RYE IPA, Oatmeal Pale Ale, etc…
From a single type of style, the brewers now play with the idea by not only using different malt and different hop, they also mix 2 different of sytle of beer together. Hence we have Black IPA (which is Stout + IPA), White IPA (Witbier + IPA), Farmhouse IPA (Farmhouse + IPA).
With so much variants, how do you choose the beers? The easiest way is to try as many as you can. The more you drink, the more taste you can get from the beer. Hence from there, you can find taste that you like and the taste you don’t like. Once you build the profile on what you like is easier to choose the style of beer.
Each individual style have it’s own unique character. Like lambic will have a distintive sour flavour. An IPA will have citrusy bitter, A stout will have roasted bitter. A wheat beer will have a banana sweetness.
Well, the best part about the varients of beer is that everyone will like different style of beers. Eventually, the person will find the flavour they like about certain beer.
Beside using the tastebud to find the flavour, the nose/smell is very important as well. It elevate the aroma for the beer, the after taste that linger help make the beer good as well. Another part of it is the body of the beer, which can describe in few ways, crispy, carbonated, creamy, thick, oily. The Taste, Aroma and Body combination that make you decide which is your favourite beer.
The trend of craft beer for sure will stay and it will grow, first thing is to get more people to try it. The more different style of beers you try, the more understanding you have for your own favourite style.
So how can you remember what you like on each beer? Is not easy, but always try to find your favourite part of the beer even if you don’t like certain style. You’ll be surprise that how many taste you can find a complex beer.
The important thing in drinking craft beer is always be honest to your tastebud, don’t need to agree with other people suggestion. Just have fun, enjoy your beer and keep on trying new beer. Cheers!
Are you a fan of gimmicky beer, well here’s one. Rogue collaboration with Voodoo Doughnut (famous Oregon doughnut shop) to come out with a beer with infuse doughnut flavour in there. Is now available in Malaysia. Mostly KL. Find it at The Great Beer Bar or Ales & Lagers! This could be interesting or gimmicky, you decide!

In our this week menu, we have 3 different hotdogs to choose from – Classic Dog, Jap Dog & Spicy Dog. What beer to pair with?
Classic Dog
The hotdogs come with ketchup and english style mustard. To paired it well, an english style bitter will be my selection. The light roasted malt will compliment nicely with the strong english mustard.
Jap Dog
This hotdog come with bonito flake and mayo. Is not so heavy in flavour. For that, I’ll go with a pale ale. Something not so robust yet still have a good bouquet of aroma to match well with the hotdog flavour. Amber ale can work well too.
Spicy Dog
With chili flake to spice up the hotdog, I’ll go with a white IPA to bring out the spice at the same time give a good malty with dot of bitter lingering.
These are my suggestion, maybe you can try it out at The Great Beer Bar and let ne know what you think! Cheers!
