Choose Beers Or Places?

June 1, 2010 - 10:21 am 3 Comments

The beer trend are getting better, but how many actually know how to drink beer beside swallowing it. Ok don’t get me wrong when I said “know how to drink beer”, maybe I should rephrase to how many actually enjoy beer?

Many will choose the place then order whatever is serve on their menu, as not all places have good bartender that make a kick-ass cocktail. To be safe ordering a beer is the safest choices as it hardly goes wrong.

Some people choose Beer rather then Place
Like if I mention Guinness, they will think of Sid’s Pub or if I said Kilkenny they will thing of Royal Oakes for example. If I said Paulaner then some people will think what beer is that… haha

Some pub are famous for beer that they built their brand from. Certain brand become their top seller, just like Brussels and their Hoegaarden. Bayernhaus and their Paulaner. People want to enjoy a good fine pour of beer. The beer becomes the identity of the pub.

Some people choose Place rather then Beer
Many place in town are famous, like Tom, Dick & Harry, Library, Craft Brew… people don’t really go there to drink specific beer, but for the crowd and environment. They will go there and look first to see the mood and then order from the menu.

That is when the waiter or the bartender play a big role to introduce beer to the customer. If they introduce correctly then is good to the customer if not, vice versa will happen.

The mistaken Identity
Many people that loves Guinness Draught often got confuse with the bottle Guinness Foreign Extra. They always said the bottle taste so different because is the different thing. Guinness draught is lighter and less bitter, but foreign extra is extra strong in taste with higher %ABV as well. That why Guinness Draught is not Guinness Foreign Extra.

The best are Beers and Places combine
I believe each pub have to create an identity of what beer they serve best. Many just bandwagon doing what others are doing. Each pub have to stand out from its own not because they have the best beer but what is the beer that make them popular. Here are some example.

Sid’s Pub = Guinness
Brussels = Hoegaarden
Bayernhaus = Paulaner
Overtime = Starker

Of course many outlet still not sure what to push for to create the synergy between their place and their drinks. I would love to see F&B outlet throw in more creativity to make their place more unique on their own and create their own market share. So either you choose for Beer or Place it doesn’t make that big different as long as you know what you looking for, as for those who don’t maybe you can learn something from it. Cheers!

Is Pub The New Mamak?

March 30, 2010 - 10:50 am 2 Comments

Pub a place that love by many new generation, as the new watering hole have emerge. Remember the days of boom boom pub and loud music, is this pub still the place people want to go. The answer is “Yes”.

So why Pub is the new mamak?
The answer is simple, we started of in Mamak every night during our college time. Then as we have a bit more money we upgrade to Starbucks or even now the famous Old Town Kopitiam or Papa Rich. But beside that, we need alternative and pub have come in and offer this service to people who want to have some leisure before the next day battle in the work.

Most of us are stress out most of the day during work, a little alcohol and social with friends will sure help to relax, and make life less stress. That is one of the reason, as I my self used to drink almost everyday after work just to relax and calm my mind.

But what pub offer is more then mamak. You can go in and drink alone, then you start to meet new friends. This is what mamak can’t offer. This is also how Beerbeer met a lot of it’s reader too.

Of course Pub can’t replace the “Teh Tarik” in the mamak. Mamak is still the number one yum cha arena. As mamak is more economical in many sense, or unless mamak start to serve beer too, will that be possible? Who knows? You’ll be ordering something like “Beer Tarik Kurang Alkohol”… haha

The new trend is now, pub is on it’s peak and going strong. Many new Beer place are coming up. As I see the trend will keep coming. Of course, not all work in the right direction, some eventually will end up a Boom Boom place. I prefer a soft music pub, with cosy lighting and serve a pint of beer with some nice finger food. I already got bored of those Boom Boom places that brings GRO and serve liquor without a single knowledge except get drunk and spend a lot of money.

For sure Pub is the new Mamak in town! Pub Rocks!

I like the pub direction is heading, I see a more healthy pub compare to those mafia looking pub. I like pub that offer a friendly place with good crowd, then horny people with lust. I like pub that bring people together to chill then those on music so loud that you can’t even hear a thing.

I see the pub audience getting younger and younger, I even see college student enjoying non boom boom pub, which I guess is great in many ways. What will the trend be in 5 years time? Any ideas?

Say My Name

say-my-name-01

As time passes by, I see so many cool pub names, like Tom Dick and Harry, Library, and a whole lot more. I still remember when I was 18 and the dream of opening a pub was really a fantasy of all my friends.

The first name which came to one of my friends was Church. We buy an old church building and later convert it to a pub. With the cool architecture and acoustic sounds, it would be great. The chances of having a place like this is zilch in Malaysia. I think it is taboo in Malaysia once all these are associated.

the library @ e@Curve

Few years later, Kenny came up with Library, studies, university, school and other cool names. As you guys know Library has already been taken but nevertheless, just for the record, Kenny said it FIRST…LOL. I think it would be really a great thing having such names. To top it all, you even have the feel of the library.

Yes, having your own names like SID’s, J’s, dave’s would be a cool thing too man. It is like this my place man, it is my second home. Remember to pay for my food and beer… LOL. But really think that most people would definitely want to remember their places with their own names.

I think now the German places or names are so overused man. No offence but every place I turn to has a German restaurant or pub, just use a German name. Why can’t we have our very own Malaysian watering hole man… think MALAYSIA, with all Malaysian qualities and features…. Remember PUB MAKAN or Minum Minum!

brussels beer cafe @ menara hap seng

Not only that another name for Pub are places or city. The famous one would be Brussels, then we have Barcelona, Madrid and even Munich. I think more will come I kind a dig the name “Tokyo”. Nice places name will be New York or Sydney. Of course pub owner will normally name it somewhere famous for beer.

overtime @ Jalan Sultan Ismail

A Pub’s name place a big role in to whole feel of the place, have to good feel and good vibes, some pub name’s will bring in some funny crowds and some bring in some good crowd. We have name like After Five, OverTime and WIP both related with work. Maybe someone will name it URGENT or KIV (Keep in Views)…. haha

How important are names? I think it is important enough for people to remember the name of your place. Nevertheless, names are many a times gimmick to promote the place. What say you guys?
