Hakka Republic, Menara Hap Seng

January 5, 2011 - 9:00 am 6 Comments

Each time I chill out or dine in outlets at Menara Hap Seng, I had always tell myself over and over again that I must at least pop in to Hakka Republic to see what they have to offer, given its interesting name. I think same question pop up in almost everyone’s mind when they hear the name Hakka Republic, do they serve hakka dishes or chinese cuisine? Asked the person in charge why call Hakka Republic, we were told that long time ago, hakka did indeed form a republic in Borneo, Kalimantan. But mystery still remain as to why Hakka Republic name is chosen for this outlet which serves mainly western and touch of fusion fares.

Bottles of liquor and wine nicely and neatly arranged at the bar.

See what I mean by it is a mystery that they don't serve chinese cuisine? But I do think it leaves an interesting impression.

Backdrop of a wall at one section.

Another view of dining and drinking area

Lanterns hanging on the ceiling with oriental touch.

Let’s move on to their beer on tap.

No kidding, this is one of the best Guninness stout on tap for me... It was on its best form that night, absolutely cold creamy and fresh. I knew it's worthwhile travelling to KL for this after the first sip.

Tiger beer draught. A chilling cold beer to kickstart the night.

Whilst I was browsing their food menu, I noticed wine pairing are written in the menu recommending selective wines for certain starters and mains. In addition to this, customers don’t need to order by a bottle of wine if unfamiliar to them, as they sell half glasses or tasting portion for all wine as well.

Soft roll buns

Rolls of butter and dipping for the buns... olive oil with balsamic vinegar got my appetite perked.

Smoked duck salad. Love that they include yam bean (sengkuang) in the rocket lettuce combination for that extra crunch apart from the tender duck meat.

Another starter - Timbale of Broccoli, Tomato with Fresh Tiger Prawn & Cavior Mayo.

Beef wellington with yorkshire pudding. According to a friend, this tasted differently from the yorkshire pudding he had eaten in Australia. Nevertheless, according to the person in charge, this is one of their popular dish.

Cut the beef wellington into two and you get this... The puff pastry wrapped around the rather juicy meat was crispy and not soggy at all.

My lamb lover friend said this was mediocre.

Apart from its interesting name, there’s another little discovery on this outlet that is worth mentioning. We were sitting by the bar with my handbag on the bar counter, all the sudden the bartender cheekily asked, “Miss, is your handbag fire proof?!!” and he was holding a small can in his hand. I was puzzled for few seconds, and then we were told to move back a little as I watched the bartender in action setting up the ‘Flaming Lamborghini” from a customer’s request. Check this out…

How did the string of fire come about at the bar? The bartender practically pour gasoline on the bar counter just for the ‘ooh and ahh’ effect. But most importantly, it did draw other customers’ attention as spectators and cheering were all round when the customer finished the drink. Flaming lamborghini wasn’t the only thing that the bartender did for this, as he did it for certain shots as well.

Just look at the bartender's face whilst pouring gasoline on the bar. Full of enthusiasm isn't he?

Hakka Republic has live jazz, rhythm and blues performance on Fridays, and it is a good place to chill out, try out some wines, and chat with friends and business associates given the cosy environment and background music.

Sunday Afternoon with Brussels at Menara Hap Seng

November 19, 2010 - 12:00 pm 6 Comments

This is one of those beautiful non-scorching hot sunday afternoons when I crave to have my first cold beer of the day, away from the hustle and bustle of any busy shopping mall in KL. Here I am at Brussels, Menara Hap Seng KL, sipping my beer on a breezy sunday afternoon while chatting away… absolutely relaxing without any hecticness or crowds.

Although it's a Sunday, their draught beer is still at its freshest! Franziskaner at RM26++ for one pint and Leffe Brune at RM16++ for half pint both at happy hour rate.

One of many outlets that has happy hour rates for their draught beer applying whole day and night on Sundays.

Beck's - Pale Lager from Germany. It has a sharp but clean taste that goes down quite well.

Crown Lager, Australian beer. My friend was curious about this. It has rich malty taste but slightly over carbonated without the expected crispness.

Ample seats outside the outlet.

Check out their weekly set lunch...

Some of their food highlights on the menu. I have yet to try the food here but I will do so for their pork knuckles! Any feedbacks on their knuckles?

Nearing sunset, we made our move to Luna Bar, located at Menara Pan Global which is just a stone away, walking distance from Menara Hap Seng (how convenient). This place need no further introduction as it has made a remarkable impression base on their amazing KL city view on 34th floor. The best is, on a days like these, we didn’t need to hunt or make any reservation to obtain a window seat to enjoy a vast sight of KL city during sunset.

Brussels Beer Cafe is already a familiar name when some one is looking for imported beer to drink. This is their second branch at Menara Hap Seng. This outlet may not be as big as the one in JayaOne in terms of space but still a nice corner area at Menara Hap Seng.

A lot of similar identity of Brussels Beer Cafe at Menara with the one at JayaOne which you can identify straight away. They maintain almost the same interior design. I always like wall with a lot of photo frames, make the place very home feel and cosy.

Just like the one at JayaOne, as early as 6pm the place already have a building crowd enjoying their beer. Most drinkers come here for a pint or 2 of some imported beer, just to kick start their night joy.

If you like a bit more airy space, you can always choose to sit on the open air area. Which I always prefer but it was still a bit sunny during that time, so I was hiding in the shade.

I was there to try out the Belle-vue Kriek for the first time. The beer have an interesting taste but a lot sweet flavour and some wine kind of texture. Is an appetizer drink with sour and sweet flavour.

Of course this place have a good bartender that have knowledge about beer that give a good pour. A good pour will for sure bring out the best of the beer. The staff here are quite familiar too, as you may have seen them in JayaOne before.

The beer choices here are quite similar with the one in JayaOne. With a wide range of beer you sure will find a beer that cater to your taste. They even have a good range on tap that will satisfy your tongue.

If you still not sure which beer to choose from, you can always go to the counter and find the bottles that you like. Of course Brussels Beer Cafe is famous for their Hoegaarden and Stella, but this place do offer a lot more then that.

Overall Brussels is already well known for their imported beer, customer will pay a good price for the beer. Some enjoy the taste, some enjoy the company and some enjoy the crowds. I do say, thanks to Brussels imported beer become more seeks out and there are more beer hunters now looking for good beer. So if you are in KL and craving for good beer, this will be the place to be. Cheers!
