August 4, 2010 - 2:24 pm No Comments

I do a search online and found that International Beer Day (IBD) is not really a big thing yet. From Wikipedia IBD fall on 5th Aug every year. It was created to opposed Oktoberfest in Germany. This event was created Santa Cruz, California.

They even have their official website http://internationalbeerday.com/.

How to Celebrate International Beer Day
1) Find A Local IBD Celebration on the Beer Map.

2) Drink With Friends
If you were thinking about spending International Beer Day by yourself, think again! Drinking beer may be the most important part of celebrating International Beer Day, but we’re pretty convinced that beer goes best with a little conversation. So drag your friends out to an IBD celebration or invite them into your home, but make sure you have some camaraderie to go with your brews.

3) Enjoy Beers From Other Cultures
It’s a big beer world out there, full of wondrous new flavors. Be adventurous, try something new on International Beer Day!

4) Give the Gift of Beer
Beer tastes better when someone else buys it for you, so it’s a tradition on International Beer Day to buy a beer for a friend and present it to them saying, “I bring you the gift of beer.” By giving the gift of beer to your friends and receiving the gift of beer in return, everyone’s beer becomes much more delicious.

5) Thank a Brewer, Thank a Bartender
Thousands of men and women around the world have devoted their lives to providing us with the enormous variety beers we have available to us, and on International Beer Day it’s important to let these people know that we appreciate them. So write a note, leave a tip, make a call, or just say thanks, but make sure your brewers and bartenders know that you love them.

So far in Malaysia, we know Brussels Beer Cafe is doing a promotion on that day. Any other pub is doing it? We will update if we know about it. Cheers!

To Arthur… this toast still ringing in my mind once a while. A toast of celebration for 250 anniversary of Guinness existence in the world. Malaysia is a proud country of Guinness, we received the best brew Guinness award outside of Ireland. We are one of the host for Guinness 250 years celebration that see Black Eyed Peas perform live in Sunway Lagoon. Even St Patrick would loved Malaysia if he still alive, that thousand of people around Malaysia will have good fun during that day sipping in Guinness.

The trend of drinking Guinness is way to good for the brewery, if we walk across the border like Thailand or Singapore, to find a Guinness Draught won’t be an easy task. This black liquid have been enjoy for generation, during the time of Guinness Foreign Extra till today the Guinness Draught pub phenomena.

Guinness also choose Malaysia as a test market subject for their black lager. Only Northern Ireland and Malaysia are chosen for this test market, which is kinda nice to have the privilege to actually become a market decider.

The growing trend of Guinness also saw the younger generation sipping in the beer, a beer that use to be “old uncle drink” have change to younger crowd. The young working youth are the crowd to sipped in a lot Guinness Draught and maybe that’s the reason why Guinness Black Lager is here to test the market as we have a lot of young ones enjoying the drink.

Further more the prices of a pint of Guinness have drop from RM30 per pint to know a days you can get as cheap as RM25 for 2 pint during happy hour. We can see the demand of Guinness can determine the crowd as cheap beer will sure attract some people. With this kind of  promotion everywhere in town, it can conclude that Guinness is here to win people heart.

The black liquid market is fiercely dominant by Guinness, the nearest competition will be Royal Danish and O’Connors. Previously we see Beamish stout in the market but that doesn’t last long before they stop to import the product here as is not easy to fight Guinness in the black liquid market in Malaysia.

Male and female Guinness drinker is almost equal in ratio when come to drinking Guinness. Within this short period of time Guinness have won the heart of Malaysian. From a drink of chinese coffee shop to now the drink of all pubs, the drink of old man is replace with youthful drinker, this drink is for sure to stay.

The Guinness mania is everywhere, every pubs is now trying to bandwagon and sell Guinness to attract people to their place, offering happy hour price that tempt you to have the habit of drinking early. The mania is here to stay… too bad they sponsor rugby, if they have sponsor World Cup, the black liquid will be madness in town. Cheers!

Choices of Wheat Beer

April 20, 2010 - 10:17 am 3 Comments

Barley beer are seems so history as the new market drinker are now aiming for wheat beer. All I hear now a days is all about, have you try Hoegaarden? That place got nice Paulaner draught? Franziskaner goes nice with the pork knuckle.

So how many wheat beer we have in Malaysia? Here we do a simple wheat beer brand calculation in Malaysia. As usual we like to see how many brand you know out there… haha

1. Hoegaarden
The most preferred wheat beer in the market. This beer is from Belgium, lately you can find this beer in every single pub. Either bottle or draught this beer has sure change the beer scene in Malaysia, making imported beers way too cool to have. Is the “IN” thing right now. Who the Hoe now?

2. Paulaner
The German big boy has come a long way since then. This beer is quite seek after, can find it in many pubs and restaurant around town. Most German establishment carry this brand. They are the one that make Oktoberfest in Penang kick ass big time!

3. Weihenstephan
This beer is one of the catalyst how Beerbeer started. The first time I tried this beer, it really change the whole perception how I look at beer. This beer really a hard benchmark to fight in wheat beer category. Win many award in many beer competition.

4. Franziskaner
A mouthful to pronounce it’s name, the tap have been quite popular lately. Again, some German food outlet is caring this brand, wheat beer sure goes quite well with the German food. The tap is much better then the bottle. I will try avoid the bottle if the tap is there.

5. Konig Luwig
Another German big boy in Malaysia market. Konig Luwig is not so famous compare to the top 4 up there but this beer do have some follower that a Konig will cure all stress… haha, or is it mean Tonic?

6. Hacker Pschorr
This beer have wide range of wheat beer, but all come in season. The bottle is one of my favourite as they come with flip flop that you can recycle the bottle for daily usage. But this beer is not as famous then the above mention as many can’t pronounce the name. Is more like Hacker Shore… Pschorr is not something we Malaysian can speak.

7. Johann Auer
This beer exist for a while in the beginning of the year, hope they bring this beer back. This beer is quite nice and added another challenge to the famous brand to run for their money.

8. Flying Dog In-Heat Wheat Hefe Weizen Ale
This beer is from America, the wheat beer body is a bit different from the German style weissbier. So far only 1 outlet is selling this beer, hope more places will carry this brand and many can able to enjoy it around town.

9. Erdinger
A beer that once remembered by many is now back in the market on tap. No many outlet carry this tap for now, but I believed many people will try to find this brand that once famous in German restaurant in Malaysia.

Here you have it, the 9 brand that you can find in Malaysia. Hope I don’t miss any of it. But wheat beer in Malaysia is sure to stay, as the imported beer is full with choices of wheat beer. As always the more choice the better for Beerbeer to cover and review.

The wheat beer is one beer that can goes nicely with food, as the beer is normally more aromatic compare to the usual barley beer that we have in the market. But in the end, we still need the consumer to grow and understand the beer, this way the market will only grow stronger and the brewery or distributor will bring in more good beer to the market. Cheers!
